Why moisture, ventilation, rainfall, drainage and maintenance need to be understood before selecting footing materials.

Base and drainage form the foundation

A riding surface begins below the visible sand. The base is designed to provide a stable platform, while the drainage strategy manages water movement appropriate to the site and construction design.

Fiber additives do not replace proper arena base construction or suitable sand selection. If a base or drainage system has an underlying construction issue, an additive cannot be presented as a corrective substitute.

The footing layer: sand, textile and fiber

The footing layer normally uses a selected arena sand as its mineral component. Material options such as textile flakes and synthetic fibers are considered for their contribution to the working surface when blended in a controlled process.

Compatibility is informed by the sand particle size and shape, fine content, cleanliness, moisture condition and the intended riding use. The same material form may not be suitable for every sand or facility.

Moisture, grooming and ongoing management

Moisture affects sand cohesion and the way additives interact in the surface layer. A written watering, grooming and depth-management routine is as important as the original material selection.

The operating team should observe surface behavior through normal use and adjust routine management according to weather, traffic and the facility's adopted footing plan.
